Hey OLY Crew,

We all know how important it is to get our greens in but it's not always easy....until now!  Here is a great morning pick-me-up green shake that not only tastes great (yes it really does!), it will also provide you with a hearty dose of goodness to start your day or use it as a post-workout protein shake.

In this smoothie we use spinach as it has a lighter taste than say Kale, but if you are into kale then you can certainly use it too.  Because spinach has a more mild taste it is very versatile so not only can you use it in a shake but you can also sauté it and top your eggs with it, or add to soups or salads.  It's a great green to have on hand.

Benefits of Spinach for the OLY LIFTER

  • Spinach is high in iron to help keep your energy levels up;
  • Lutein which benefits eyesight and guards against cataracts and macular degeneration.
  •  Vitamin K for bone metabolism, osteoporosis prevention and is an important factor in blood clotting.
  • Magnesium which is super important if you are lifting.  People who workout have a higher tendency to be deficient or low in magnesium. Magnesium has been proven to increase athletic performance. It is necessary for proper nerve and muscle function, maintenance of a heathy blood pressure and is involved in hundreds of biochemical reactions in your body every day!

1 Serving

  • 1 handful of spinach-- you can add more for a stronger taste but start here.
  • 1/2 banana (frozen if desired)
  • 1/4 avocado OR 1 tbsp nut butter (healthy fats, potassium)
  • 1-2 Tbsps ground flax seed (fibre and omega 3)
  • 1-2  Dates for sweetness (optional) or low cal sweetener if desired.
  • 1/2 cup almond milk or whatever milk you like, add more less for desired consistency
  • 1/2 cup ice
  • 1 scoop your favourite plain or vanilla protein powder (optional..tastes great with or without but if you want higher protein then add it)

Blend all ingredients in a high speed blender until completely blended and enjoy.
