Do You See, Hear and Help Your Brother In Need?
Look around. How far and long does your gaze have to go to see your brother or sister in need? Across your work area? Out in the parking lot? Around the corner of the building? Down the street or in the neighborhood? Chances are you don’t have to look far to see someone in need, someone who could use your help. Whether it is encouragement, some workplace advice, a referral to a helpful expert, physical or financial assistance; there are many around us who are in need of some brotherly aid. The Holy Bible tells us in 1 John 3:17-18 “If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions in truth.” Crystal clear, if we love God, we love those in need by taking action and sharing what we have. OlyLife believes that this does not mean we have to sell all of our possessions and give them all away to those in need. If we did this, how would we support our responsibilities to our own families and church? While some like Mother Theresa are called to sacrifice everything to help the poor, most of us would likely interpret this scripture to mean that we should love our brothers and sisters and use some of what we have to help those in need.
The Number Of People In Need Can Be Overwhelming
Some folks become paralyzed and do not take action to help those in need because it seems like there are so many poor people and therefore they feel their contribution won’t solve the problem. It is true that the vast famine in Africa is bigger than any one of us, but if we all give of our treasure, talent and time; our collective efforts can make a huge difference. If you give food and shelter to one person, you have made a difference. A vaccination of a single child is monumental to that person who will now grow up without a potentially crippling disease. A small water purification contraption for a family can keep out water born illness and offer amazing quality of life change. There are also organizations such as World Vision who are given grants such that your one hundred dollar gift can potentially be matched and magnified by as much as ten times! Think of the number of children that can receive malaria medication for that amount of money and go on to live! Thank God for those of you who are taking time out of your day to reflect on your brother and sisters in need.
