Unfortunately we cannot program and use a predictive dialer system that automatically tells people what we want to say for every speech or public speaking opportunity we come across. Public speaking can be a scary and stressful business and if you are like most people; you have at least some degree of public speaking anxiety.

Public Speaking Tips

Public speaking does not have to be a terrifying experience you can learn how to deal with your stress and anxiety and give a great speech by learning the tips and tricks of the trade. You do not have to buy a long expensive book or do hours of research in order to give a great speech without too much stress; all you have to do is learn the tricks.

Here are some tips on how you can give a speech with confidence and with minimal amounts of stress:

  • Know your stuff. When you are preparing to give a speech it is important that you know the material through and through. Knowing the material will help you be able to talk more calmly and it will also help you know what to talk about if you accidently skip some things you had prepared to say. It is also important that you know your audience. Know what the audience expects and what the audience would enjoy.
  • Be aware of your body language. Your body language is an important part of your speech. People do not just remember what you say but how you say it; they will remember what you were doing while you said certain things and if you look down and read from your notes the whole time they will not remember much. Find your balance of walking, smiling, eye contact and hand gestures that you feel comfortable with.
  • Keeping eye contact. Eye contact is important but hard for some people. If you have a hard time making eye contact with the people in the audience there is a trick you can use. The trick for faking eye contact is to pick a spot on the wall right above the audience and to look at that spot as you give your speech. This trick makes it look like you are looking at the audience when in fact you are looking right above their heads.
  • Visual helps. Many people are visual learners and others remember things better when they have an image to go with the words. Using a PowerPoint can be helpful but make sure they are concise and do not ever read straight from a PowerPoint presentation.
  • Don’t forget to breathe. Relax, don’t forget to breathe and remember to give yourself a pep talk right before your speech.
