Are You Idle And Desirous of Change?
All of us can fall into the trap of becoming idle. Whether it is an early retirement, a layoff or just a dependence on others, there are blessings that come with a commitment to step away from being idle. This is not to say that you cannot or should not enjoy retirement, but perhaps there is something you can do to serve others part time. If you are depending on others, don’t become idle. Keep looking for ways to move toward independent living. The apostle Paul tells us in 2 Thessalonians 3:11-13 “We hear that some among you are idle. They are not busy; they are busybodies. Such people we command and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and earn the bread they eat. And as for you brothers, never tire of doing what is right.” When you are at work, you are actually honoring God’s word in following through on this directive to earn your keep. Those of you who spend time helping your neighbor with food, clothing, encouragement or other assistance are also serving God and avoiding being idle.
An Idle Mind …
We have all heard the saying that “an idle mind is the devil’s workshop.” There is no doubt that if you do not make a plan to put some time to work in a God honoring activity that you are in fact letting the devil get the better of you. For most folks, keeping busy is not an issue as there are lots of demand on our time at work or home. OlyLife suggests that we remember that Paul also warns against being busy bodies and not producing real work for God. Sometimes, we can be so focused on activity that we fail to realize that we have spent little time if any on work for God’s kingdom. When we take time to think of how we can help a neighbor, family member or co-worker, we are doing work that serves a higher calling. We want to encourage you to avoid being idle or a busy body, but remain steadfast in being a fully devoted follower of Christ and thereby make the most of your one and only life – That’s OlyLife!
