The U.S. Must Put People Back To Work Full Time

Return To Economic Prosperity

If we are going to get out of the economic crisis that the U.S. is facing, OlyLife suggests that our country needs to figure out how to get people back to work full time.  Workers who can have jobs with full benefits will feel secure enough to start spending again, thereby creating higher demand for goods and services which will lead to economic expansion and further hiring etc.  The problem is that too many people are unemployed or only partially employed and the tax payers are then forced to foot a bill that we cannot afford in terms of food stamps and other government aid.  A recent MSNBC article highlighted the following statistics:

  • 46Million people are now on food stamps (15% of population)
  • we have had a 74% increase in food stamp enrollment since 2007
  • the stigma associated with going on food stamps has been largely removed with debit cards
  • in May 2011 1/3 of all Alabama residents were on food stamps (tornadoes increased the number some degree)
  • in May 2011 D.C. and Four states investigated had over 1/5 of the population on food stamps

What Should We Do To Get People Off Of Government Dependency?

Most Americans are able and willing to work.  Perhaps we need to change the system from government handouts to government work outs.  In other words, if the tax payers are going to give money to those who can work, we should hire them to do needed work to improve our cities, and community amenities until other investment projects in the country’s infrastructure can help put folks back to work.  Corporations should be given incentives to build manufacturing in the U.S. and the minimum wage should be raised so that the taxpayers do not have to subsidize workers who still qualify for government subsidies.  The corporations will get the benefit of higher wages when the economy grows due to increased spending as the number of working poor diminishes.  The poverty level of the U.S. cannot improve unless we can get back to near full employment levels.

The Government Cannot Solve The Entitlement and Unemployment Problem By Itself

In order to fix the economy we will require both government and private sector intervention in order to put America back to work.  A renewed spirit of Keeping America Great must emerge to pull everyone together to spur across the board sacrifices of near term profit for the greater good.  The huge export of our jobs that happened during the last several decades cannot be fixed over night, but if America is to continue as a leader in the world, we must get back to making products and jobs available in this country.  Instead of giving away or foolishly spending our tax dollars, let’s demand that Washington spend these dollars wisely in ways that will incentivize our industrial base to rise again creating new technologies and manufacturing for energy independence, improved national highways, bullet trains, airports and other core job creating and future enhancing projects.

OlyLife Encourages Responsible Compassion

It is not responsible to do away with food stamps for all.  There are those who truly cannot work and our hearts break for those who are significantly disabled or unfairly burdened.  OlyLife suggests that the government could save a significant amount of tax payer dollars or at least increase productivity for the dollars spent, by investing in strict accountability measures to ensure that those who are not deserving of a helping hand from the tax base do not unfairly take money in lieu of going out and getting work or instead of going into a newly created jobs for food stamps program.  It is time to make sure that America does not continue down the path of unfairly burdening the tax base by ever expanding entitlement programs.  Let’s help those who truly are in need and for those who need work, let’s put America back to work.  No one who can work should get government money without contributing productive hours in exchange.  There is dignity in work and this type of arrangement is in line with responsible compassion.  If we all pull together and demand that Washington bring some true accountability to entitlement spending and to provide incentives for job creation, America will be closer to providing an environment where each citizen can truly make the most of his or her one and only life – That’s OlyLife!
